Dear Listener,
Thank you for joining us in celebrating the 150th birthday of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor! With this project, we aim to preserve and promote the legacy of one of the greatest composers from the turn of the 20th century. Unfortunately, for such a prolific and successful composer, so much of Coleridge-Taylor’s music remains unknown to audiences today. The works we perform on this album haven’t been featured on a commercial studio recording before. Our mission in researching, performing, and recording this music is to share it as widely as possible, hoping that it finds listeners who become interested in performing the music themselves. All the pieces are in the public domain. To that end, consulting Coleridge-Taylor’s manuscripts, we have created modern performance editions (scores and parts) for Toussaint L’Ouverture, Ballade Op. 4, and 5 Negro Melodies, accessible by scanning the following QR code. These editions are free to use to any orchestra interested in performing this music. We hope you enjoy these recordings as much as we enjoyed making them! -Michael Repper |
