CONNOR CHAIKOWSKY, MAIRÉAD FLORY, AND MAIYA YEN TO RECEIVE $1000 SCHOLARSHIPS AND PROFESSIONAL MENTORSHIPS

BALTIMORE, MD, January 5, 2017– The Chamber Music Society of Maryland (CMSMD) is excited to announce the recipients of its 2017 Youth Fellowship: Connor Chaikowsky (Violin, Age 16), Mairéad Flory (Cello, Age 17), and Maiya Yen (Piano, Age 14). These outstanding young musicians were chosen from an extremely competitive pool, encompassing applicants from Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia.

The Fellows, in addition to receiving $1000 scholarships, will receive private instruction from Dariusz Skoraczewski (Principal Cello, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra), Michael Sheppard (Pianist and Accompanist, Baltimore School of the Arts and Peabody Institute), and Katarzyna Bryla (Violinist/Violist, the LUNAR Ensemble). Together with their mentors, the 2017 Fellows will prepare Beethoven’s “Archduke” Piano Trio, and present that work along with solo repertoire in a public performance on April 30th that will be professionally recorded.

“The Reinecke Youth Chamber Music Fellowship is a unparalleled opportunity for outstanding young musicians to become immersed in the field of chamber music, and to be mentored by some of the finest professional musicians in the region. We are proud to continue our commitment to providing opportunities to budding musical talent, thereby strengthening our musical community.”
-Michael Repper, Managing Director of CMSMD
        Founder/Director of Reinecke Youth Fellowship

All three Fellows are distinguishing themselves as some of the most promising young artists in the region. Mairéad Flory is currently a National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellow and the winner of the Feuer Memorial String Competition, Gaithersburg Young Artist Award, and the Blank Competition, among others. Connor Chaikowsky has been the winner of multiple awards at the Peabody Preparatory, served as the concertmaster of the Peabody String Ensemble, and won the Rockville Competition for Piano and Strings. At only age 14, Maiya Yen has already been recognized throughout her district with awards for Distinguished Music Achievement, and by competitions in the Maryland State Music Teachers Association.

The Chamber Music Society of Maryland, founded in 1974 as Music in the Great Hall, is recognized as one of the premiere chamber music series in the Baltimore/D.C area. Along with its integral community outreach program, the Reinecke Fellowship, CMSMD presents some of the world’s most sought-after musicians through its flagship series, Music in the Great Hall. Recent seasons have featured Anthony McGill, Soheil Nasseri, Amit Peled, Marina Piccinini, Leon Fleisher, and many others.
